procedures

I purchased you book on Paradox 9, Power Programing. I need some reading on creating procedures that can be called to do a function and return several answers. Right now I have one big program that runs and works, but I would like to break it out into procedures for ease of maintenance. I could do it in Pascal, but seem to be having issue with Paradox only RETURN one answer. IE read a number convert first 4 digits to sales number and last 4 digits to item number, and make the whole thing variable. The variable I have.
I am converting 4.5 to 9.0 and book did the job so far. Maybe next level of book?

Thom,
Functions in all languages generally return one data item. So, in addition to the one return value, you can pass parameters in by value or by reference. Big Grin!

Here's the techie stuff to get you going:

Geek Alert! By value means that a copy of the parameter is created and used within your custom method (not the answer). By reference means that a reference to the variable is passed into the custom method and altered. Therefore, you can simply pass in however many variables you need.

How many parameters can you pass in? I prefer to use a record type when the number of parameters exceeds 8.

An array is a good choice too. You can pass an array as a parameter if you create a custom type of an array.

These concepts are discussed in chapter 18 of my Paradox 9 Power Programming book.

You can return an array. Check out the below post (the last on the page):

Thank you for your link. Atroxell states try using a second var to return answer. The procedure seems to only allow me to have one RETURN statement IE RETURN (S) I want to RETURN (S,I) but I get an error. If I return array, I need to make s=arrayitem (x) and i=arrayitem (y). Yes?
