Unknown Internal Operating System Error

Two years ago, our office switched from Paradox 5 to Access 2000, however, I kept all my original Paradox files in our network shared drive. Since our IT director does not care for MS products, we never switched to Word and Excel, but upgraded WordPerfect and QuattroPro without Paradox. This caused a lot of integration problems and the resulting decision was to switch back to Paradox. We now have Paradox 10 and I need to start the conversion process once again. I was attempting to open one of the old Paradox databases I created to see if I could just update them. Although the forms will open, the tables will not. The error message I get is "Unknown Internal operating system error" and it refers to a file named "PDOXUSRS.LCK". This causes the forms to open with blank fields since it cannot read the table. Any ideas on what is causing this?

This is an easy one and a hard one at the same time and people here have helped me with it so I'll tell you. Easy part is to go whipe all the paradox *.lck files off your server and things should open fine. You should make sure no one is accessing that files or the directories where the paradox files are before though. The difficult part comes in if you have different cversions of windows on your system. If you have an XP box and a 98 server like we do you're in hell. Get lots of info about oplock or oppertunistic locking of files in WinNt/2000/XP. If any of these OS versions are anywhere on your system you'll have to make sure they are set up right so oplocking doesn't knock you over every two seconds.
This is highly ironic that you'd switch Excel -> Paradox just as Paradox is being abandoned by Corel. See other topics in this region. Another Leo _ _ ___________________ _ _ We are Micro$oft You will be assimilated Resistance is futile

Take a look around the Paradox Interactive heading. most likely you'll find what you are looking for in there because myself and lots of other newbies have been asking the same questions for a while, and got help from these smart people there's a reach facility at the top of the page and many pages of replies on the subject. Especially look at the posts where i asked about setting up my network. There's a bunch of info in there. As for Paradox, I make my living on it at the moment. I've gotten more and more alergic to M$ products with time. I've never used the integration of the Office stuff that badly, but I'm probably a special case :) Another Leo _ _ ___________________ _ _ We are Micro$oft You will be assimilated Resistance is futile

Thanks Leo. Actually I did find the information about deleting the .lck files from the server through Corel's Knowledge Base, however, it didn't work. I'm beginning to think the IT department did not install it correctly. If I set everything to my local drive, everything works just fine, but when I try to set the NET DIR setting in the Paradox driver setting to the network drive, I can't even get Paradox to fully open. I've asked them to provide me with any installation information they may have received with the product so I can hopefully help them get it working. (We have a very small IT budget!) I'm glad you mentioned the problem with the operating systems, perhaps some of the problem lies there. We are using Windows 98 and 2000 on a Novell network. It is ironic that we would be converting back to Paradox at this time, but I don't think I would ever have a chance of talking our IT director into getting us the full MS Office Professional Package, (I've been trying for the last 3 years), and I just want a suite that is fully integrated to create a more efficient workplace.
