An application I have been playing with has now decided to include some extra files when it compiles, these are designated _qsq1.mb and run on up to say _qsq34.mb.
What are they? And, how can I stop them procreating as I think I have enough files as it is!

Those files should actually start with a double underscore, and there's probably a corresponding .db for each of the .mb files. These are temporary tables, that normally should be deleted when the queries close and the app terminates normally. Until you figure out what's going wrong and correct it, you'll just have to delete those pesky critters.
By the way, if you prefer to control where those files are written, you can do so by assigning a path for Session.PrivateDir, something like: Session.PrivateDir := 'C:\TEMP';

From memory a .mb file extension is a "Paradox Memo Holder". This would suggest that it is a table related problem. By any chance are you using queries? I have known queries to add these supposed temporary files and leave them there. I solved it by shutting down queries immediately after using them.

Do your data access components use cached updates? I sometimes find that if I have an activated, cached TClientDataset pointing to an activated TQuery or TTable, that the in-memory datasets show up as "__q??.mb" files. At run time, they would always show up if a cached dataset went into edit mode without being posted, committed, and deactivated. Of course, I've only seen this with BDE connections, but not with ADO or dbExpress.

Use a file server (not a workstation) to store your data, disable Oplocks on the filer server, and configure the BDE (local share to true and optimize if desired). Finally, if workstations are crashing, fix em so they don't. You want clean running computers that don't crash.
