If you have a community college where you live, you can even take a cheap 1-unit walking class and qualify for the educational version of MS Visual Studio Professional. That way you can purchase your programming toolset for around $100 + the price of the class, which should be around $50 or less. That's around $800 of software for around $150.

Well then, in that case, I would add C# to the list. As a Delphi professional, I am very much at home with C# and the new Visual Studio .Net platform. I think Microsoft has finally come up with a winning development environment, and every serious developer should check it out and take C# for a spin.
