Problems with newly created application

Hello there,

I have just completed an application in Paradox 8 using the Application Framework and I am having a couple of problems. When I run the application from our L drive, which is on our network, there are no problems, all the forms work properly and everything is happy. However, when a colleague trys to use the application from his computer he has difficulty. The initial form opens up properly but when he presses the buttons on the custom toolbar that I created nothing happens. Then, when he logs into another computer the application works fine. Also when I log into his computer there are no problems. Has anyone dealt with any problems like this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I tend to think it's a 'horses for courses' thing, either you like AF or not.
It's not without it's fiobles and generally as such it worked for me. It's certainly not blameless but, I tended to put problems such as you indicate either down to my very own crapulent coding or that rotten Paradox Distribution Expert thing which always seemed to put the alias's where it wanted them and not where I wanted them..

Whilst this post is of no practical help, look on it as moral support! I think, as Mac suggests, 'it' could be in the coding.

Gary, have you read the other posts about the AF in the Prestwood forums? It sound like Mike and most developers have decided it's not worth it to do new projects with the AF, since it's no longer licensed or supported by Corel, and was not a part of Paradox 10.

I sounds like you may have hard coded something. Do a global search of your code for something like L:

It could be, Gary, especially if one of your aliases is for the desktop or some other place that 2000 puts things differently than 98. Have him open runtime and then try to set the working directory to each of the aliases (if you declared them as public). If he gets an error then you know which alias is causing the problem.

One other thing, in 2000 he may not have permissions set properly for one of the subdirectories. Have him log in as administrator and run the software again. If it works right, then you can surmise it is a permissions issue. Every Paradox problem I've had with 2000 and XP has involed permissions based on login.

That does not make sense (which is why it's driving you mad, I'm sure). If he tried logging in as Administrator and it still doesn't work, then it doesn't follow that when someone else logs in it does. Are you actually observing him or is he telling you this? I still think it has to do with permisssions - not in your program's directories, but in the Paradox directories. On principal, have him get full access permission to the Corel directory and all it's subdirectories. If he looks at the directory and it seems to be set right that's not good enough. Make sure he explicitly has the permissions set by the admin, even if it appears he already has permission.

The only other thing I can think of is there is something loading into memory (based on his profile) causing a problem. Have him examine the task manager list and compare it to one of the people for whom the program works successfully.

Gary, this absolutely has got to be either a permissions issue or a drive mapping issue. Get the admin to give him full access rights to the entire hard disk and see if that works. Also, see if he has mapped any network drives that are weird. Other than that, I'm stumped.

I don't use the application framework, so I won't be of much help to you here. However, I do know that the Novell Client (4.83) was causing problems with Paradox refusing to load. They patched it, and I had no further problems. Just as a wild guess, I would try reverting to an older Netware client (4.82, maybe).

I have read the posts regarding the application framework, however, the application that it is being used in fits perferctly into its capabilities. Going back to my problem though, if it was something wrong with the code, would it not simply be the case that it didn't work under any circumstances. The application works for everyone else except one person, when he logs into his OWN computer. Could it be a windows 98 to 2000 issue. His computer runs 2000 whilst mine is 98 and I have no problems. I just don't understand how it can be a problem with the code when it works in some instances and not others. Any suggestions?

Mac, I have tried doing both of the things that you suggested but they have both left my colleague unable to run the application properly. I don't think it can be an alias problem after thinking about it cause he can 'run' the application and access data, it is just when the application starts he cannot use the buttons on the custom Toolbar that I have created. He has to go via the drop-down menu to access a form. Once he has reached a form the buttons start to work fine. Again, though when someone else logs into the computer the whoe application works as it should! Have you got any other suggestions? Hope you do!! Thanks

Sorry to keep bugging you like this Mac but this computer problem is driving me up the wall! I have tried doing the things that you have suggested. I came to the same conclusion about the task manager and I have eliminated all the processes from the start up that were different under my log in but the application still does not run properly! The next stage I guess would be to start uninstalling programs, or to re-install windows but this isn't a road i really want to go down. Can you offer any other suggestions? I am really confused with this problem. Another colleague has just returned from holiday and with his computer, which runs 2000 also, there are no problems. It only seems to be under one single persons login that casues problems!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are starting to agree with you that it might be a permissions issue, however, we have got a new problem now. We tried to install a patch to Novell to see if that would help. Basically it didn't and after everything else, we had to wipe the hard drive and re-install windows. After doing this and installing Paradox I am presented with a new error when I double click on the .exe file that runs my application:

"Exception EInOutError in module new_digi_links.exe at 0025082 I/O Error 183"

This is preventing me from even getting into the application at all. All that is happening is that the launcher splash screen is appearing and then this error appears. Any ideas? What does happen is if I double click on the script file that is asscociated with the .exe file the application works perfectly but why does the .exe file not work.
