An information technology department in a college maintains a library of reference books on the following topics: databases networks systems analysis
Each book has a title, one or more authors and is identified by its ISBN. For example, Databases and Database Systems Concepts and Issues by Elizabeth Oxborrow has ISBN 0-86238-237-8
The department wishes to record details of its reference books in a computer-based system for stock-checking purposes. The system will need to record the number of copies of each reference book the library has. The least significant digit of an ISBN is a check digit. In the example above this is the digit 8 at the extreme right-hand end of the number. The system will need to check that the number entered is a valid ISBN on each occasion that this number is used.
Design a suitable record structure to hold details of each reference book. Limit the author field to the first named author.
The records are stored in a data file on magnetic disk with four records per disk block. The file is referred to as the Book Stock Book data file. A requirement of the system is that it should allow a book record to be accessed when a user specifies a particular ISBN.
Each copy of a book is assigned a unique number called the bookÆs accession number. The librarian will need to be able to find out at any time : ╖ How many copies the Library owns. ╖ How many are in stock. ╖ How many are on loan.
The librarian must also be able to look at a book and change, its loan status on issue or return. The system will be used on several computers, which are not networked. Thus the data must be available in a way that allows it to be moved between the librariansÆ machines as needed. It will not be used on more than one machine at a time. The librarian expects to use windows, a number pad and a mouse for most operations, since her keyboards are often locked away!
