We're thinking about changing the name of our company from Prestwood Software & Consulting to just Prestwood Software. The original thought behind the longer name was that we wanted everyone to be able to identify by our name that we are a consulting firm and software maker. The reason we're thinking about shortening it is because it is shorter. Prestwood Software & Consulting is harder say, longer to write, etc. So the central question is, "Is the '&Consulting' required?"
Your assumption about a dba is correct. It's really only important from a marketing point of view (business cards, letterhead, etc.) Our "legal" name is Prestwood Enterprises, Inc. All corporations are required to put the word Corporation in their name or Inc at the end.
I like the idea of keeping Prestwood too. I think we've established "some" name recognition. We'll see what happens.
We've decided that we are informally going to stick with our name but just the shortened version of Prestwood Software. New marketing stuff will have the new logo starting in November.
Well, who would have guessed that this would generate more messages quicker than any other posting!
Maybe this ought to be opened up properly as a competion and offer a prize - but, please choose something that could also be shipped to foreign climes!!!!!!!
Then of course you'd be getting your brainstorming for free-ish.. Now, where's did I see that entry form? rt

'Prestwood Software & Consulting' is neither fish nor fowl. If you're going to indicate the company's offerings in the name, why stop at just two? And why those two?
If you try to put everything you do into your company name, you would have to call it 'Prestwood Software Products, Custom Software, Systems Consulting, WebSite Construction, Internet Hosting, Technical Publishing, & Information Services' which is not only hard to say but would make your business cards seventeen inches long.
I think your reputation has grown to the point where you could call your outfit just 'Prestwood' with the heraldic logo, and give everyone the impression that if they don't know what you do, they should immediately find out.
'Prestwood Software' will be just fine. Everything your company does concerns software in one form or another.

Where and when is the dba important? On paper, ala business cards and letterheads? As compared to spoken communications and it's chatty email cousin?
Why does Prestwood Software & Consulting think the name change is a tactic worthy of consideration?
Whatever you decide to do, the people here already know you ... and will call you by whatever they find convenient.
No matter what you call yourself, the public will use whatever it likes. Nicknames are a form of recognition.
What abour Psst, "Prestwood Software Solutions & Technology"?
Or Stars, "Solutions That Are Really Solutions"?
Does Prestwood Software & Consulting wish to embed it's purpose and mission statement within it's name, or evoke emotion? In today's world, both are viable tactics.
Please just make sure I know what you're called.
Thank you Prestwood Software & Consulting. Thank you "just for existing".

At the end of the day, its your company and you should have whichever name you want. Prestwood Software sounds good to me and still lets people know what you do.
However, Angel software has a certain ring to it dont you think......

For a little big longer, I would stick with Prestwood Software & Consulting. As an account manager,it acutally shortens my introductions to people. The long version helps them connect with the nature of the business I represent. As we continue to grow as a leader in the industry, the community, at large, will shorten it as many already do to Prestwood.
