Game is over (reality check)

I did support and development for RBASE, then Paradox. When Access 1.0 came out no threat, 2.0 was better and 97 flat out buries Paradox. Sorry folks, being an expert in Paradox is like being a Novell expert, no one cares, the game is over. If you wise up you'll also realize that if you can do VBA the next step is VB and you can be a real programmer.

I agree that Access is more popular and that did occur around the time of Access 97.

Here at Prestwood we primarily program in Delphi (a truely OO environment) and VB (not truely OO yet, but will be with the next version) as well as two desktop database tools: Access and Paradox. I'm less concerned about which is more popular and more concerned about which is more powerfull, easier to use, and correct for a given company/project. You spoke in generalizations so I must ask what specifically do you prefer about Access? For you, what makes it more powerfull and easier to use?

Us Paradox users are hanging on your every word tc tell us more....

I think you've touched a nervette here!
In the words of the old song "It's not what you do, but the way that you do it" so why don't you ease up a bit in your delivery as you are sounding very fraught and may do yourself a nasty.

Other than you, old chap, there's no-one here banging on about how superior Access is, beauty is in the eye of the beholder or put another way there are horses for courses, it's just that my horse likes the Paradox scenery.

And, quite frankly without the marketing might of Microsoft (which stuffs it's myriad products into every computer whether or not they are wanted) the playing field might be a little more even between the two products, which in turn would appear to loose a mighty lump of your argument especially if you had shares in book shop.

Too much stress here folks, 20 years doesn't make me an expert, but understanding reality is not heavy handed it's common sense. I used to thing RBASE was the greatest along with FOCUS. Well Focus is hanging on but Micromrim is long gone. Getting upset because your product isn't #1 anymore won't help you in supporting a product or having to get support. If the product you are using has no market share it's not going to survive. Go to a geek bookstore and come back and tell me how many Access and VB books there are compared to Paradox. The two places I teach Access and SQL Server have not had a paradox class in over 4 years. Personally I liked Paradox, but what I liked doesn't matter.

Gee, I thought the childishness and nastiness was from the other side(Example, anyone from any consulting firm referring to VB programmers as cowboys, PLEEEASE). Here is a clue folks, what I said is like Dragnet, just the facts. I didn't tell MS to win the PC DB war the buying public made the choice. You give me too much credit.

It's not very often that I'm moved to reply but it seems tc, that having read your two posts that you have come in here with all guns blazing - why? I'm sure the folks here don't need to be lectured to and will also respond quite happily without the need for, well.

I've also taught and can only hope that during your teaching career you didn't employ the same heavy duty attitude that you appear to have adopted here.

Dice.com has about 15 jobs (taking out the obvious duplicate-postings). They're the same ones posted on Monster.


Of these, only one or two don't require database experience.


Interestingly, most of them require experience in JavaScript (no surprise) and either C++ or Java, or both!


Most of the VB programmers I've met on the job or at shows here are VB Cowboys, and don't work under any methodology (see the PSDM on our web page).


Since none of these cowboys ever seemed able to talk the OO talk with me (or walk the OO walk), it will be interesting to see how Visual .NET affects them...




You might be able to make some money here in Sacramento teaching OO to all those VB cowboys...

Well, I did say I wasn't afraid to open a can of worms...


The term "cowboy" wasn't meant for VB programmers in general, just the few I've met and worked with or spoken with. I first read of the term in Wired a few years back, and it means not following the process of requirements-analysis-design-collaboration-testing in development (which OO development seriously begs for), but the shoot-from-the-hip, ninja warrior style of coding (which a lot of good software has been developed in).

It wasn't meant to be derrogatory - just an expression of the style, which is much harder to pull off in an object oriented application.




If Visual .NET is going to be a true object oriented environment, then all of those ninja warriors are going to have to rethink their modus operandi.

The way a kaleidoscope works is to permit fragmentary or detached things to wind up their own particular amicability. Keep in mind the best and overlook the rest. Like paint, our confidence in God should be mixed up. It gives us feeling of ways of life, outfits and form. A debt of gratitude is in order for sharing us.
