Does Paradox support connecting to 3rd party or custom ODBC data sources? I have one installed, see it in the BDE Administrator, but can't find where I can connect to it from within Paradox.

To add an ODBC data source, first define its DSN.  Once defined (created), you'll see it listed when you create a Database alias in the Database Driver Name dropdown (default's to STANDARD).

When I go to the Alias Manager and choose the "Driver Type" drop down, it only shows me STANDARD, DB2, FOXPRO, INFORMIX, INTRBASE, Microsoft Access, Microsoft dBASE, Microsoft Excel, MSACCESS, MSSQL, ORACLE, and SYBASE.

None of those are one of the 3rd party ODBC drivers I'm looking for that I have installed.  I can see the driver I'm looking for via the 32-bit ODBC Data Sources on either the "User DSN" or "System DSN" tabs.  I can also see these drivers via the BDE Administrator tool.

Is Paradox hard-coded to only know about the specific ODBC drivers listed above?

yes, those are the other drivers / platforms that existed back in 2003, and the driver versions by default are from the "latest and greatest" versions of those platforms, at that time

that's the list in "Drivers\NATIVE".. have you looked in "Drivers\ODBC", below that?

again, I'll defer to others for suggested current alternatives

I haven't tested these suggestions,  but have you looked into this website?

Thanks for the quick responses.  The link to the BDE helped me get the ODBC driver setup and I can now see it in Paradox.

Thanks!

Hello PS_1743,

I have the same problem where the ODBC drivers show in BDE and connect, however they do not show in the Alias Manager in Paradox itself. I checked the link above but cannot find anything that corrects the problem. Can you tell me what you did to fix it?

Thanks

I no longer have Paradox installed, but if I recall, the trick was that even though you can see the ODBC driver listed in BDE, you still need to:

  • Select Object -> New and select your ODBC driver
  • Configure that database definition as necessary
  • Likely will need a restart of Paradox after making any of these changes

Hope that helps.

Unfortunately I've tried that and when I go to Paradox (ver 11) the alias is there, but the driver is blank, event after restarting computer. Only the "native" drivers that were installed with Paradox show, no ODBC drivers (and I've confirmed they are 32 bit.).

Thanks for your quick reply.

I vaguely remember having challenges like that, too.  On your new DB object in the BDE Admin tool after saving the entry, you can then change the ODBC DSN to point to a DSN for your ODBC driver.  I think that's the way I got it to work.

Good luck.

I got it fixed. I am setting up a new computer and it was working on my old machine so I looked through and compared the registries and found where the ODBC listing shoud be and exported (the one I needed) from the old machine and merged into the new.

Here's the location: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Borland\Database Engine\Settings\DRIVERS ...

Thanks for your ideas and time fellas. Best.
