I wish I could say the same as Linda, BUT alas that is NOT the Case! After a CUSTOM INSTALL from WPO 2000, Installing ONLY Paradox 9 etc I Installed the Win32Hlp as Mike Prestwood Indicated in His Article. I also Installed the BDE Version 5.2.0.2. - BUT ALL TO NO AVAIL!!

If I try to Open the Help for ObjectPal Reference From the Help Menu, I May Get it & I May NOT. Same applies with the LookUp Help - ie pressing f1 with cursor on a Paradox Keyword.

Additionally, I often find that while working on a form and the saving it, I then try to Close it and get the Dialog "Paradox for Windows Desktop has stopped working"! Windows trying to find a solution etc!! After that Paradox is closed down completely and I have to restart IT!

Unfortunately (???) there is no consistency with having saved the form or for that matter not having saved the form, I might get a dialog option to save it then again  I might not.

Nor does closing the form from the File Menu Help. I have Checked & rechecked security option's and sharing etc etc all to no avail!! Most times, I am saving to my Development Dir and there are No security Issue's there! I have also set PDOXWIN to run in compatibility Mode for Win XP with sp3 Also tried sp2 and run as Administrator etc etc. BUT STILL THE PROBLEMS with saving & closing the forms persist.

I have also been doing some development work where I get the Created Date using win32 API for a file as selected (using Browserx) by the user. The first time around ALL works well BUT after that I get "UnExpected General Protection Violation" and have to bug OUT OR CRASH out of the form (I'm NOT using Frameworks).  I've Declared the Kernal32.dll in the uses Clause and the code for Getting the creation Date works fine (getting the date 3 or 4) diferent times IF I RUN THE CODE IN A SEPERATED FORM ALL BY ITSELF, BUT when I try to close the form, Yep U guessed it "Paradox for windows desktop has stopped working" Strikes again! By the way I do get the correct Date for the File (Hard Coded in the WinAPI form)! Same if I use the other form when the user selects the file. Trouble is I also get alsorts of nonsence about using an unassigned variable and the function "SubStr()" also has been giving me some curry!!

As for my Download Manager project, its ground to a Halt and if anyone can shed some some light with the above erratic behaviour, I'd be over the MOON, well much appreciate it!!!

Hope someone's got a few suggestion's - at this stage I might go BACK to BORLANDS PARADOX 7.

For me PDOX9 with Win7 works in a stand-alone and as a server in a network.

Right now I have PDOX9 on my server with Win7 and the 4 network members on XP. The only problem I get is when I try to run a client with Win7. Then I get BDE errors. Not sure why, but running XP on my client servers is not a problem...right now!

I  have been having extensive corruption problems on windows 7, some of which are apparently due to BDE. From what I have read so far it appears that it is necessary to reset the Net Directory to any folder outside of C:/ - the suggestion is to create c:/BdeShare and reset the Net directory (BDE Admin>configuration>native drivers>Paradox to that folder. It may also be necessary to update BDE - there is an upload on Prestwood Boards, and possibly to set permissions in the Registry.

Aside from that, I am beginning to suspect some fairly exotic W 7 issues.

I have been using Paradox with Windows 7 64 bit for about 9 months without a glitch. I have seen some posts where you will receive a dialog from Windows that says that Paradox wants to close but it does not.  Personally, I have not had this happen.  As a single user, I am very happy with with way Windows 7 and Paradox get along.

I have had the same messages quite a few times and ignored them. I came here to look for help for  my issues, but you reminded me of these glitches. What I am experiencing now is extensive blob field data loss in some but not all records  added under Windows7. I don't know if there is a connection, but I wonder. I think, given that possibility, it is advisable to exit on the errors and to reopen the program, checking any file changes that have been made during the past session.

Note: The action which elicits this error is attempting to access a blob field in specific records, but not all. It will repeat on every attempt to access those records' blob fields, but in no other records, whose removal and recreating fixes the problem (until another turns up). I would be very interested in hearing what initiates the error behavior for other users.

I have had the same experiences as Grahm with P11 on 32  bit Windows 7. I replaced kernel32.dll and resolved the question of shutdown. Try uninstalling it, wiping all references and reinstalling Paradox to see if there was a dll corruption.

One of my further issues was a pair of embedded jpg's in a stored .doc, which seems to just about have busted the framework. That being said, I still experience occasional file corruption - not of the main blob file - which I battle with a nightly backup.

I have discovered that querrying out and removing the  files added since the last corruption leaves the rest of the database intact. Repairing the extracted database causes no data loss, so the repaired file can be reimported.  Too bad for the effort, but at least the data is safe.

One more issue I have discovered, which others may already know, is that Paradox apparently handles any .rtf  memos (formatted memos) poorly, so that keeping all memo files basic rather than formated may reduce problems.

It seems to me that I discovered a couple of more fixes, which I will report back if I can find them.Silly stuff, really. I still resents Corel's removing the service packs for P11  from their file database. If they are ineffective and the program doesn't work with Vista, for which it was conceived, for for Win  7, which could be anticipated, then they should just offer an apology and an upgrade.

Thanks Anonymous,

The Kernel32.dll Sounds Like a good Idea!! Can you suggest where I might get a replacement for Win 7 Pro x64?

Given all that I have read Re Corel Paradox Problems, Including their Help, for example if you Have a look at the "Restructure" procedure/method in the ObjectPal Reference ( If it will come Up), the Instructions are INCORRECT.  If you follow the Example, NOT the Instruction's, It will Work!! That's NOT the only WRONG example - CheckOUT the Format function!

So COREL can't even give us CORECT Information in the Help file's Never mind about HOW BADLY they have BOTCHED Paradox!! It Doesn't inspire me to even think about any other Corel Products thats for sure. I see someone else was also asking is/stateing the Same!!

One thing for Sure is I won't be Upgrading Paradox to a Newer Version!!

I'm still Curious How Linda (in above reply for this post) has managed to run Paradox without a Glitch?? Mike's also has managed Same!!! Maybe they can advise their specific system setup and a Definitive Log on how they Installed their version of Paradox. It seem's to me that there maybe Something in the INSTALL Process - Theirs work - Ours Don't - well not Properly!

I wish BORLAND was still alive and WELL!!

The shut down error should probably not be ignored. Shutting down and restarting seems wiser to me.

You must choose a directory other than the root directory (C;\ for net directory and set local share to "true" in  BDE.

You probably also need to adjust the BDE Settings. Here is a  suggestion from the DB Community http://www.thedbcommunity.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=207&Itemid=46  If I am not wrong, Steve Prestwood has a slightly different suggestion here.

HI

After Some Testing (EG EXACTLY (Byte Comparison etc) Same Code in a Different Form, I Get error Msg's Such as "Can't use an UnAssigned Variable.." and "Unexpected General Protection Violation". The Var in question in the Debugger say's it is Assigned!! The Protection Violation as understand it, has to memory! How Can two Different Form's with exactly the same code - comments and all, One will work the other Does Not!!! I Have even resorted to turning of my Internet Security while running the Code!!

The Code is mainly to do with using "kernel32.dll" and obtaining the CREATION Date as per Pascal Hutton's Win32 API with a minor change to get the Local Time Information and also diplay it. In the Working version I Run the Code multiple Time's (6 - 8 times) WITHOUT a GLITCH!!

I have Tried Many MANY things -  BDE Updated and Configured Properly, Re-Installed Pardox 9,  Checked Out the Kernel32.dll, Checked online with MSDN ref use of Functions in the Kernel32.dll (Parameter's and Data types etc),   Deleteing the NON  Working Version and Re-Creating, Double Checked Code Placement, Variable Scoping and so on!! End Result is still the Same.

I used "Beyond Compare 3" for file and Data Compares and there is no doubt in my Mind as to a difference either between the Form's and Its Code and the Kernel.dll.

I'm using Win 7 Pro SP1 and WPO 2000 with SP4 and BDE 5.2.02 and can only Conclude that trying to USE the Kernel.dll in Win 7 Pro X64 with Paradox 9, is ERRATIC and Unreliable!!

If I remember the errors I received, one was an attempt to access non existent memory parameters.  It took me a while to figure that out, though. The VAR issue is odd. Can't figure it.

Hi: I am new to these posts, but have a more simple problem: Pdx 11 on windows 7, 64 bit - works well, but anytime I open it directly or via a form - it gives me the "This program has stopped working" with the 2 options of "closing the program" and "check for a solution and then close program", either option selected closes the error form and open paradox with no problems, same occurs when closing paradox - either directly or via a button on a form. Any ideas? I have not seen any posts that handles such peculiarities - if switching to Paradox 9 does the trick - so be it

That seems to happen to me when the table is corrupted (which happens a lot). Check to see if it needs a rebuild. Otherwise, see if there is a specific error on the alert (click on Help or Details). Post it.

Having used Paradox 7 on win95 thru to win 98, XP, and Win7 using the compatability tab making it WinNT with SP4 all was well, i have just installed Win8 on a text machine, and installed Pdx 7 - sadly there is no compatability drop down for WinNT SP4 - so what do i do know. The program opens, but when i go to select my data source it is telling me (or rather not allowing me to select my database on account of the OK button being greyed out).

When i open Pdx direct, and then go to the Alias Manager, to manually configure to select my d/base the OK button is still grayed out.

Is it easy to upgrade to Corel Paradox 11 - or does it mean re-writing loads of stuff to allow the database to actually work..

Please help..

Luckily i still have (and my clients) still are using Windows 7 or lower.

Hi:  Thanks for the advice, I have done so, I also have re-installed the 32bit version of Windows 7 (any type works very well, very stable) on another laptop and puff no more problems. I had to in anycase, as most of the other software that runs various instruments, etc., cannot handle the 64bit versions of Win 7. Its amazing how Paradox was designed to be a very sturdy database, been using it since 1995.  I have it working even under Ubuntu Linux - using WINE.

Even the sturdiest product needs updating now and then...'nuff said.

You have put me in a bind, since I do need a new laptop (T 60 is the greatest machine ever, but not cutting new technology - can't expand ram, etc) and all the new ones are either 64 bit or W8. Just asked at MS mini mal store how to downgrade. Seems it is not possible. I will have to purchase new version of 7 32 bit. (OEM will not install on laptop chip set, even with a new drive.) Nice to have to buy two versions.

Now here is the funniest thing!

Currently running paradox 7 on win 7 64 bit... u can change compatability tab to win nt with sp5 and it works ok, i had to move the borland folder from program files(x86) to just program files so my shortcuts all worked..

my win 8 issue goes along the lines that there is no drop down to win nt in the shortcuts compatability tab.... but i have 2 versions of my database (the main installation and build using paradox 7 standard) and the one we roll out to clients using pdx 7 runtime. i have managed to install using pdx 7 standard then copy various folders ( borland, and the app we run) from one machine to the win 8 machine and it runs ok... what i cannot do is install the bespoke pdx 7 runtime and install our client version in win 8.

i have downloaded the win compatability tool, and u can run it and test it in nt4 mode but as yet i cannot work out how to save it so it associates it with the shortcut?

Is the compatibility tool a Windows or a Corel solution? (I imagine windows.). There is a drop down to xp? Might work.

Looking to get at least a Windows 7 laptop while they last (Microsoft is pushing them all off the shelves and only permitting the retailers I have spoken to to sell it in the floor machines they still have, so it's a race) I have discovered that Dell offers a choice of systems.  Wondering if I should just go with 32 bit, or if 64 with xp mode would do the trick. Need to make a decision very quickly.

Either way it will work on Win 7 - just move the Borland Folder to c:\program files if doing it on 64 bit.

Wish I had known that.....but I don't think the 32 bit system is that much of a trade off. One of the issues I had with vista 64 was also it's failure to recognize some drivers. Anyway, it's done. Thanks.

This is my work to date on getting Paradox 7 working to some degree on my windows 8 64 bit machine.

I just need to write a registry hack so my clients can install it.

Hi,

I've just installed a few days ago, Paradox X3 english version on my Windows 7 64 bits and all seems to work well. Icons just have a security shield over it (probably because it's not Win7 approved...)

Sharepoint culprit?

Regarding Paradox 8, 9, 9+, X3 on Win7, I fought the battle after buying a Win7/64 PC. and had trouble.

For awhile I did the Pdox work on my older WinXP platform, but that option seems even less wise as M$ drops XP support.  (Reckon there had to be an end somewhere, since the XP revenue stream had dried long ago and nobody was paying M$ to code security patches.)

However, I recalled that our dbCommunity sage, "goddess" Liz, had warned that Paradox would not run reliably on Win7 unless we remove M$ Sharepoint, which I have not been using anyway.  So on Win7, I have removed Sharepoint, re-installed Pdox, and am resetting my old Paradox structure.  Later, hopefully, I will be able to some progress!

I actually found that when using Paradox 7 - and MS Office 2007 - my clients had to remove Groove - as it is not an installable option for most, you have to install full and then remove Groove afterwards.

Also when using a fresh version of MS Office 2013 - you need to install the runtime of MS Access (when using word - if not the whole office pack) so you can do mailmerge.

I have also managed to get Paradox 7 on Windows 8!!!

Hi,

I use pdox on a network using windows 7 64 bit, pdox version 11. It all works as it should be.

A good setup starts using BDE.

Greets,

Henk. T
