So every once in a while I think to myself, "gee, I wish I'd bought Paradox 9 Developer instead of the regular Pdox9 back in the day." This time, I decided to go ahead and -- having given up on finding the Developer Edition anywhere at all, let alone for a reasonable price -- look to see how much of its features I could handle with something else.
As far as that goes, the only actual pieces of software that are only in 9 Developer that I can tell are the Distribution Expert, the PeerDirect Replicator, and JRun.
Figured I'd deal with the last one first. Has anyone ever used another Java app server instead of JRun with Paradox, like perhaps JBoss or Tomcat? Heck, has anyone ever even used JRun with Paradox at all? What does "using JRun with Paradox" mean? I mean, is there any real interaction between Paradox and Java where a JSP server would interact in some way that's fundamentally different from a servlet app server using JDBC to access any old database?
I hope this question isn't as obtuse as it feels. I think it's probably two questions: one, how does Paradox interact with a JSP application server (JRun) in the first place and how would that be different from how anything else would, and two, is there anything lost by using another JSP server in its place?
My opinion is that I would NOT use JRUN for anything. I have used it and it worked okay. I also have used the ActiveX web server that ships with Paradox 9. The ActiveX web server was fun in that we could use ObjectPAL to create web pages. However, even that said, I would NEVER use the ActiveX control in a production environment myself just because there are much better solutions available. We developed a Paradox database knowledge base built on the ActiveX Paradox control complete with templates. It was cool and fun but we ended up building our current knowledge base in ASP. Mike Delaney wrote the code for the Paradox Knowledge Base. Mike was one of our Paradox developers a few years back and technical editor of my Paradox 9 book.
JRun allowed you to use a Paradox JDBC driver with your Java code-base. The server passed the request to the JRun servlet which used the Paradox Servlet to process the request for the Report Server.
However, Paradox 9 came with more than just JRun. It came with a Corel web server and a full ActiveX web server that allowed you to build a webserver in Paradox. Kind of cool.
If you have my Paradox 9 book, you can refer to chapter 25 for details on all the web server stuff included in Paradox. Also, there's a step by step tutorial for building your first webserver using the ActiveX control.
With that said, you're still better off with other technologies, but it was kind of cool back in 1999.
My memory tells me that the Corel Web Server, Paradox 7 ODBC driver, the JDBC driver, JRun, Delphi add-on kit, etc. ONLY came with the developer edition. That stuff along with my Paradox 9 Power Programming book were the reasons to spend the extra money for the developer edition.
Thank you. That was my general feeling as well -- I didn't particularly feel like using a closed-source solution that has not been updated over the years as a production tool. I would feel much more comfortable with something like Apache Tomcat for serving up JSPs.
I guess the broader question is, given that JRun apparently worked tolerably well, what was the functionality added to Paradox with the Java-based tools in Pdox9 that would make the JSP approach appealing in the first place? I've developed with Pdox plenty, but never done anything with it and Java; I don't know what the bundled Java tools brought to the table.
And as far as the ActiveX web server, was that the same server software that was included in Pdox9?
"JRun allowed you to use a Paradox JDBC driver with your Java code-base."
I'm pretty sure that my copy of 9 has a JDBC driver, but I thought I didn't get JRun -- I thought it was only in the Developer's Edition. Am I mistaken? Do I need to go back in the box and dig some? :-) Or will I need some application server to replace JRun before I can use it? I hadn't really tried to use the jPdox stuff yet, so I haven't tried anything with JDBC.
