A bit late replying to this post, but the problem was fixed and thanks for letting me know. I moved the boards to a better more reliable server and forgot to include the new server in our SMTP list.
Do you have specific questions you can post here? Or, do you want to open a support account with the host company of these message boards and work with a consultant on a one on one basis?
Good to see you back up and running! I wondered what happened!
However, it looks like you're not back up and running 100%. I tried going to "My Profile" and found out I can not view, much less edit, my profile information; it insists that I am not logged in. However, each time I log in, it tells me I succeed, showing me the "Hi, Rick Carter" message and all that. Go back to "My Profile" and it once again tells me I'm not logged in. You get the idea.

Well, nice to know you Moderators are happy, but I'm still waiting for a solution to my problem. I'd like to be able to change my Signature line and email address, and I don't think that should be too much to ask for. Can someone please nudge Mike or someone else who can help?

I'm starting to gain some knowledge on databases and was wondering why are some table structures considered to be bad and others good? And how would one recognize the difference between good and bad structures?
Kevin
The concept you're referring to is known as "database normalization". It's a balanced scale, where it's your job to find the proper spot along the scale that balances your needs in order to develop a "good" database structure. Some qualities of a good structure are that it's clear to use and maintain, it doesn't duplicate data (or your efforts to deal with data), and it meets your needs as far as speed and space requirements are concerned (as with nearly everything in computing, it's always a tradeoff rather than a pat answer).
Here is a good starting point; for more, perform a google search on "database normalization"...
I wonder is it more by design or mistake that the "bad" ones slip by to the client. I don't think I would have the expertise to recognize a "bad" one.
I know that from a Marine Corps perspective some mistakes are unforgiving and costly too. Or more so is it a matter of "normalization" being influenced by cost? Thanks again.
Until that time....stay motivated
Kevin
It's an experience thing. Once you've had to rearchitect, or even worse work around, a bad data model, you learn quickly what made/makes it a "bad" design, and you avoid it in the future.
Also, you might end up spending a lot, in time, in money, in effort, to fix a bad design. Again, this (hopefully ;-)) smartens you up quickly.

Thanks for fast reply Mike! Basically, I just need to get a kick start on creating an ERD and data sets. I have a business case I created for the course that requires an ERD, data sets, 1nf, 2nf and 3nf. My brain fluids are not flowing in the right direction yet but I'm hoping they get moving.
Business case:
Leatherneck Security Services (LSS) is a Washington, DC based company that currently employees 75 retired Marines and Sailors. LSS has recognized that some of the problems encountered in protecting personnel and facilities can be attributed to a lack of uniform security standards, procedural guidance, and training. The LSS mission is to provide various levels of security around the clock 365 days a year for stateside businesses. Since LSS is a relatively small company the most lucrative long-term contracts are accepted. Future growth and expansion of LSS is currently a planning milestone as security demands increase. LSS current IT structure consists of one central computer room (CCR) with a database to track security issues. Personnel will use Nextel and Motorola personal handheld devices for communication. All personnel during assigned work hours will wear an equipped war belt to repel intruders when necessary. Two IT personnel with DBMS experience are on staff to support the CCR. A security officer, sergeant of the guard, and section leaders manage LSS operational structure. There is a strict chain of command for addressing internal concerns, and external concerns are addressed through the executive level. LSSÆs internal system of checks and balances makes it possible for immediate identification of company concerns and issues. Today LSS provides physical and personal security for Lockheed Martin and contractors in the Washington, DC area. The area of responsibility consists of 4 buildings, 90 personnel, and one remote location. Since security reports of this nature are sensitive Lockheed is the proprietor of any information involving their assets.
Business report requirements: 1. How many personnel/building security breeches occurred during the week?
2. How many personnel were detained for security violations?
3. When did the required security checks occur?
4. How many incidents of deadly force occur during the week?
5. How many incidents of classified security violations occur during the week?
6. How many incidents of arrests occurred during the week by local authorities?
