Wireless Router & Security: A Step-By-Step Guide
by lowster11

Setting up a wireless router is easy. Essentially you turn your cable or DSL modem off and your wireless router on. Then, you connect the router to the modem with a cable, and turn the modem back on. You are more or less done. The wireless network wizard on your computer will pick up the router and, if your ISP does not have any special requirements, away-you-go, you are on the Internet.

 Monthly Tech Lesson
WINS Topic:
Definition of the Month: Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)

Microsoft's implementation of NetBIOS Name Service (NBNS), a name server and service for NetBIOS computer names. Just as DNS serves up domain names, WINS serves up NetBios names and is particularly useful within a Microsoft-based network when or without the NetBIOS protocol installed. Use of WINS will decrease broadcast traffic.

Even though DNS mostly replaces WINS as of Windows 2000 Server, WINS still has benefits within a Microsoft network.

Resource Link of the Month: Test Exchange Connectivity

This is an invaluable tool for troubleshooting Exchange / Email problems.

Wired Networking Topic:
Question:

Do I need different connectors for Cat 6 then what I'm currently using for Cat 5?

Answer:

No, Cat 5, 5e, 6, and 6a all use the same RJ-45 connectors and are downward compatible. Meaning you can use a Cat 6 cable in a Cat 5 network. The difference is in the quality of the cable. Cat 5e is rated higher than Cat 5, Cat 6 is rated higher than Cat 5e, etc.

However, when building a Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable, you have to use the correct type of connector. Meaning, Cat 6 connectors are built differently even though you can use already made cables.

DNS Topic:
Tip of the Month

The best free and fast DNS server service provider is OpenDNS. At least that's who we are currently using and recommending.
