A Six Point Checklist to Help Your PC Run Better
Posted 6 years ago on 5/30/2015 and updated 11/5/2020
Take Away:

This article discusses some tips for maintaining your PC so it will run more efficiently.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a “cheat sheet” of sorts for making your PC run more efficiently? A sluggish running computer is not necessarily a “nail in the coffin” that requires you to go out and buy a brand new machine. The only real reason I can think of for doing that is if you need to run a software package that requires more processing power or a newer version of Windows – things your current computer can’t offer. In many other cases, it only requires nominal adjustments. Let’s take a look at these six tips which may make your computer perform better:

  1. One obvious thing you can do to make your PC run better is a “virus scan”. There are many programs that can do this: Avast, Avira AntiVir, AVG, ESET Nod32, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton and more. Just be sure to download and install the virus definition updates before you launch the scan.
  1. Another process that will help the machine is a “spyware scan”. Like virus scanners, there are a number to choose from: Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, Webroot Spysweeper and others. These also need to have the updates configured before scanning will be the most effective.
  • One more helpful task you can do is to perform a “registry scan”. This doesn’t check for malware, but rather it detects and removes redundant, irrelevant and non-existent entries in the Windows system registry. A bloated system registry can slow the computer if it’s not periodically scanned and cleaned. I use two free programs to do this called Eusing Registry Cleaner and Glary Registry Repair. Of course there are others, too. There is also another registry utility I like to use called NT Registry Optimizer. It condenses the Windows system registry so it isn’t larger than it needs to be.
  1. A very useful chore you can do is to disable unneeded start up software from the “Startup” tab under the “msconfig” configuration utility. Too many applications seem to have a need to list themselves on here to get their “15 minutes of fame”, so to speak. To access “msconfig”, just click the Windows Start button in the lower left corner of the desktop and then key in “msconfig” in the text box that appears just under “All Programs” on the pop up menu and then press the enter key. After the dialog appears, just click on the “Startup” tab. You will see a listing of software applications. Some are checked, while others are not. I generally uncheck the things which are not security software such as Norton, Spybot, AVG, Ad-Aware, etc. Adobe Reader, installed printer monitors, email beautifiers, multimedia stuff and other extraneous software typically have their 2 cents worth in the “Startup” tab to “collectively hog” your resources. This can be especially detrimental if there is not much memory in the PC to begin with. After you finish un-checking the things you don’t really need, just click the “Apply” and “OK” buttons. Keep in mind that un-checking these items will not uninstall them from your computer. It just prevents them from starting up with Windows.
  1. Another benefit to the above maintenance procedure with “msconfig” is that it takes a burden off the processor in your computer. If there is less software to load, then that’s less work the microprocessor chip has to do. You may also want to see how much of the CPU usage and memory is being utilized. To access this, just right click on the bottom bar of Windows and a pop up will appear. Then right click on “Start Task Manager” and a tabbed dialog similar to “msconfig” will appear. Click on the “Performance” tab and you will see graphical representations of how much memory is being used as well as the percentage of the CPU that is being utilized. The CPU usage should stay somewhere under 50% unless a program or web page is currently being loaded. That will make it spike up to around 90% or 100%, but then it should settle down after that. If it’s constantly stuck at 100%, then something is wrong. That exerts undue wear and tear on your PC’s microprocessor chip.
  1. Lastly, it would be a good idea to do an online memory test to determine what type of memory your computer uses, how much is in there now and what is the maximum amount it’s able to run. This is especially important if you don’t have much memory now and you are running applications that are memory hungry. There are a number of websites that can do this for you.

And there are many other "fix my computer" chores you can do to make your PC more healthy. What I have mentioned here are best practices known to most professionals. Please visit my website to learn more about my computer repair services.

Doesn't running a registry scan do that when it removes non-existent and redundant entries?

Conversations and dates I‘ve had with men on wellhello were very good to excellent matches for me. I felt safe with my dates and they were respectful of my boundaries. Being my favorite, this dating site is no different than the rest in that we have to be very careful about who and how much we choose to trust and who we choose to date.
