Posted 15 years ago on 4/22/2009
Summary:

Oracle to purchase Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion. The driving force behind this deal was Oracle's desire to acquire Java and Solaris.

KB101975

Oracle signed a deal to purchase Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion. This move means Oracle is now in the hardware and server OS businesses for the first time. The move follows a failed attempt by IBM to purchase Sun Microsystms. It also follows Oracle's purchases of several companies in the last few years, including Siebel, PeopleSoft, and BEA Systems.

According to reports, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said in a conference call on Monday that Java and Solaris were the two main reasons Oracle purchased Sun. This move raises Oracle's number of employees from about 85,000 to 115,000.

Since the deal was based on Oracle's desire for Java and Solaris, the fate of Sun's other products is unknown. Oracle now owns Sun's lesser known products including MySQL and OpenOffice.org.
