2. The Future of Paradox Blog

If you have an existing Paradox system you can keep using it but you'll need to skip the Vista operating system and either stick with Windows XP or move to Windows 7. Because better tools exist, you may very well want to put a plan together now for converting to another development tool or at least understand what the future is likely to hold. If you're a power-user or researcher working with data, stick with Paradox.

5. Prospect, Build App, Convert from Old

Feasibility Phase, which is part of Discovery, can include documenting existing system, establishing scope of new application (meaning document what is in old app that is not needed, plus minimal needed additional features).

Time Estimate: Although it depends on the complexity of the old application, feasibility usually ranges from 16 to 40 hours, but for larger complex applications, they can be several hundred hours.

Goals:

  1. Define new project as a Strict Technical Conversion with few additions, or define as a Technical Conversion with Additions.
  2. If appropriate to do a longer Feasibility Phase, then initiate a Feasibility Phase project.
  3. If client is ready to proceed, define 2-Step approach, initiate Step 1: Requirements (What) with minimum deliverables of Requirements Document, Initial Database, and GUI Mockup.

Note: For the best chance of a successful project, limit changes to as few as reasonable.

PDOX11 over MSSQL (ODBC) - Schema in Table Names
Might anyone here know a way to configure ODBC/SQLEXPRESS under the BDE to return table names without a schema prefix (i.e., tablename rather than dbo.tablename)? Should I be looking at a different SQL DB?  Ideally, I’d like to point the alias that currently references the main paradox database to one referencing tables ported to sql and look at what needs fixing from there.  Thanks to a tool created and shared on codeproject by one of the forum members (thanks Igor!), database conversion to SQLEXPRESS went surprisingly easily, with only a few minor field type changes needed across hundreds of tables. I’m connecting to the SQL db fine from paradox via odbc. That said, I’ll consider a different back end (Firebird? PostgreSQL?) if it means the Paradox app will require fewer changes; I’m dealing with many forms and lots of code and porting the back end is a step toward a full conversion away from Paradox. Thanks! John

Twain to jpg
Hi All.... It seems that there is no option for choosing a jpg rather than a bmp output when using Twain control from within Paradox... Is this so? If not can you suggest a work around apart from a manual conversion?? Thanks, Paul

Working directory problem, Pdox 9/Windows 7
I just loaded Paradox 9 on my Windows 7 computer to do a conversion for a client, and the only thing that doesn't seem to be working right is the alias/working directory situation. My installation keeps defaulting to my user directory if I try to change the working directory using an alias.
