4. I.T. Strategies for Hard Times

Difficult economic periods call for hard decisions. It's easy to be tempted to cut back on your IT expenditures but that can be a major mistake.

I.T. is the goose that's been laying the golden egg for businesses -for decades, now.   You don't want to starve the goose; you want to tune it up. It's crystal-clear that computing has enabled businesses to reduce costs, and increase productivity.

Custom-written software is one of the major ways that businesses gain advantages in savings, profits and productivity.  The reason is pretty simple: No two businesses, even in the same industry, do things the same way.  Mass-produced software, even for a specific industry, seldom addresses every requirement of a given business.

5. Technology Debt: Is it getting to your bottom line? Technology Debt is a rather loose bucket in which we can lump many things that come back to bite your projects. Put simply, it's like the old Fram oil filter slogan: "Pay me now - or pay me later." Unless a project has a very short life expectancy, the things that are put off today will almost certainly have to be revisited and dealt with later - sometimes with "interest." Here, we talk about what comprises technology debt, and how to keep it from degrading the profitability of our efforts.

Printing closed reports
I have a loop that executes SQL, which I use to create a report from. The loop basically goes through a Debtors table and I want to create a single report for each debtor. But here are the 2 problems: , , 1) How do I print a report without opening it, because there might be a hundred Debtors or 10;either way the user does not want to see all these reports opening., , 2) Because I use the same Answer table for the report over and over in the loop, , the first time I open the report everything is fine, but as soon as I try to open a , second, while the first one is still open, I get a error saying that the Answer table already exists, , Any help or suggestions would be immensely appreciated, Dante

separating data from a field?
Hi, Can any one tell me how to separate data in to a new table eg:, in my table.dbf there is a field called "tech name", it would have data in it something like this, |UN1992 Acetone |, |UN2810 l/s Phenol soln |, etc, I would like to strip away the "UN" and put the next 4 digits into another table field called UN Number then any data after the 7th space into the same new table but in a field called tech name., Sometimes in my table you can get, eg, , |UN1992 Acetone |, |UN2810 l/s Phenol soln |, |NDW sharps |, etc, with NDW i would like this to be replaced with , "------" in the new table field called UN Number., If I am making sense to any one and thy know the answer. I would be in debt to the them., , Jay
