Protect your computer before it slows down, you lose data, or someone steals information. The basics are an antivirus program, Windows Updates, and a firewall. Beyond that, I like to use several programs that add layers of protection to your computer.

The Basics
The basics are an antivirus program, anti-adware, Windows Updates, and a firewall.
Antivirus
If you're a home user, you can use the free edition of Avast or AVG. Also, TrendMicro offers a free online virus scan and repair.
Anti-Adware
You can use Windoows Defender, SpySweeper, or any of the other Anti-adware programs to minimize the invading of adware and malware.
Windows Update / Microsoft Update
Microsoft spends a lot of money enhancing, fixing, defending, and optimizing the latest versions of Windows. Make sure you are taking these updates.
Windows Firewall or Other
Either use the bundled Windows firewall or any of the available third party personal firewalls. Do this even if your house or company has a firewall. Protecting your computer is about adding layers of security.
Beyond The Basics
Beyond the basics you can add layers of protection to your computer, home, or business.
Home/Business Firewall
In addition to turning on your computer's firewall, consider using a firewall for your home or business.
Spybot
When you install Spybot, it offers additional layers of protection against Malware/Adware.
