10 FREE Must-Have Net Admin Apps

Posted 16 years ago on 10/1/2008 and updated 7/28/2009
Take Away:

If you maintain more than a few computers, here are 10 applications you should have in your toolbox of software.

KB101314

Here are 10 open-source programs every Net Admin should have in their toolbox of software:

1. HealthMonitor - System monitoring service

Keep tabs on your servers and workstations. Check system status (event viewer, disk free space, services status, performance....) and notify the administration by E-Mail, SMS, etc.

2. OCS Inventory NG - Automated network inventory

A computer inventory and package deployement system for Win32 and Unix. Designed to help administrator keep track of the computers on a network and their configuration and installed software. Low network traffic between agents and server (uses HTTP).

3. Angry IP Scanner - Network scanner

Angry IP scanner is fast and friendly network scanner for Windows, Linux, and Mac. It is very extensible, allowing it to be used for very wide range of purposes, with the primary goal of being useful to network administrators. Angry IP Scanner (or simply ipscan) is an open-source and cross-platform network scanner. It scans IP addresses and ports as well as has many other features. It is widely used by network administrators and just curious users around the world, including large and small enterprises, banks, and government agencies. It runs on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X, possibly supporting other platforms as well.

4. PuTTY - Telnet and SSH

PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator.

5. NtRegEdit - Registry Editor Replacement

A great registry editor and a must have if you spend a lot of time in Microsoft's Registry Editor.

6. StM - Startup Manager and replacement for MSCongif

MSConfig's startup control pane doesn't have a lot of functionality. Startup Manager is an excellent replacement, and it's available in a portable version as well.

7. Memtest86 - Better memory tester

Memtest86 is thorough, stand alone memory test for x86 architecture computers. BIOS based memory tests are a quick, cursory check and often miss many of the failures that are detected by Memtest86.

8. WPKG - Automated software deployment, upgrade and removal program for Windows

Used this open source software to push/pull software packages, such as Service Packs, hotfixes, or program installations from a central server (for example, Samba or Active Directory) to a number of workstations. It can run as a service to install software in the background (silent install), without user interaction. It can install MSI, InstallShield, PackagefortheWeb, Inno Setup, Nullsoft, other software installers or .exe packages, .bat and .cmd scripts and similar: no more repackaging to perform software installation.

9. JkDefrag - automates system maintenance (screensaver, task scheduler, and DLL versions)

Disk defragmenter and optimizer for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/2008/X64. Completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead, with several optimization strategies, and can handle floppies, USB disks, memory sticks, and anything else that looks like a disk to Windows. Included are a Windows version, a commandline version (for scheduling by the task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts), a screensaver version, a DLL library (for use from programming languages), versions for Windows X64, and the complete sources.

10. WinDirStat - Disk Usage Statistics

WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for Microsoft Windows (all current variants).

If you have a favorite program that helps you monitor mutliple computers or work on a computer, post it below in a comment.

Once I had the same problem. I read a review which said that Nerdify, the service I was looking for, was scam. Since that the question is nerdify cheating or not didn‘t leave my head. I read a lot of reviews after, but still have doubts.

I think that this is not a complete list of such applications, but many will actually be useful. True, depending on the requirements of the company, you need to indicate the experience of working with them in the resume coach.
