Take Away: SQL Server 2005 as an Embedded Database Choice in your Application

KB100892

SQL Server 2005 is the database solution for the applications of many companies, including some of Prestwood Software’s clients. Microsoft has even gone as far as to offer the Express version which includes most of the features of the full version free of charge. But what if your application requires an embedded or “desktop” database solution and not a database server? Microsoft answered your call with SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition.

From my observation, quite a bit of ink has been spilled talking about the benefits and features of SQL Sever 2005 Express (and rightfully so) but not so much about the Compact Edition. A quote from Microsoft’s website (http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/compact/default.mspx):

“Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition is the next version of SQL Server Mobile adding the desktop platform. SQL Server Compact extends the SQL Server Mobile technology by offering a low maintenance, compact embedded database for single-user client applications for all Windows platforms including tablet PCs, pocket PCs, smart phones and desktops. Just as with SQL Server Mobile, SQL Server Compact is a free, easy-to-use, lightweight, and embeddable version of SQL Server 2005 for developing desktop and mobile applications.”

Aside from all the features of SQL Server 2005, one outstanding feature of this product is the ability to synchronize with a SQL Server 2005 server upon connection, aimed at what many call the “occasionally connected systems.” Companies for example who have workers out on the road inputting and modifying data and only connect to the main database server when they arrive back at the office fall into this category.

Though this article is not an exhaustive description of the product, hopefully it will give you a another avenue to research when developing your application.
