Take Away: Megabits (mb) per second. A bit is either a 0 or 1 (a digit) and a byte is a string of 8 bits. 8 mbps (megabits per second) equals 1 MB/sec (megabytes per second). Therefore 54 mbps is equal to a max of 6.75 MB/second.

 MbPS - Megabits (mb) per second. A bit is either a 0 or 1 (a digit) and a byte is a string of 8 bits. 8 mbps (megabits per second) equals 1 MB/sec (megabytes per second). Therefore 54 mbps is equal to a max of 6.75 MB/second.

Megabits per second (note the lowercase b). A bit is either a 0 or 1 (a digit) and a byte is a string of 8 bits. Don't confuse mbps (megabits per second) with MBPS (MegaBytes per second). A megabyte is just over one million bytes of data (1,048,576) and is abbreviated as MB/sec. It takes eight megabits (mb) to equal one megabyte (MB):

8 mbps (megabits per second) = 1 MB/sec (megabytes per second)

Therefore...

• 11 mbps = a max of 1.375 MB/second (i.e. wireless B NIC)
• 54 mbps = a max of 6.75 MB/second (i.e. wireless G NIC)
• 100 mbps = a max of 12.5 MB/second (i.e. typical NIC)
