Recently I was working at one of my developer's computers trying to figure out why he couldn't see a computer on our network. I needed to launch Windows Explorer (My Computer) to look at his hard drive. He is the type of developer that maintains a really messy desktop and I couldn't find either explorer or My Computer. I was about to do the old Start | Run and type "explorer" then Okay button routine, when he said just press the Windows key and "E". I said, "what? Really!". I pressed the WinKy + E and boom, up came Windows Explorer. That made my whole day. Some how, I never learned anything about that Windows key. I thought it's sole purpose in life was to display the Start menu.
He also told me there were several other useful shortcuts, so I searched the internet and compiled my personal favorites list here:
WinKey + L = lock computer
WinKey + D = Show Desktop -- toggles (minimize ALL windows / restore on all monitors) This one is really cool!
WinKey + F = find files or a computer on the network
WinKey + Cntrl + F = find computer
WinKey + M = minimize all Windows (currently selected monitor ONLY)
WinKey + Shift + M = restore all Windows (currently selected monitor ONLY)
WinKey + R = Run forest run!
WinKey + Pause/Break = Display System Properties (this one will show your true geekness)
Out of this list, three of them have proven completely invaluable to my daily life. Number 2, WinKey + D, shows my desktop. Prior to finding this handy combination I only very reluctantly put items on my desktop. After all, it was only visible when I first booted up Windows. With Winkey + D my desktop is now much more useful. I use number 3, WinKey + F, daily. It finds files on my computer or computers on my network. Finally, number 7, WinKey + R, does the old Start | Run routine I mentioned in the first paragraph of this rambling.
