Paradox Tool Basics: dBase for Windows vs. Paradox for Windows By Mike Prestwood

Now that Borland has moved both dBASE and Paradox to the Windows environment, which should you use? The Window's versions of both dBASE and Paradox support eachother's table formats and act as a front end to SQL servers. Which table structure is better is no longer the developing issue. The decision now centers around which development environment you prefer.

If you have the time and money, I urge you to get and try both. Both database managers have their strong and weak points. If you make a living at developing databases, then this suggestion is reasonable. If you don't, then hopefully this section will reassure you that you made the right choice. If you code in dBASE then it makes good sense to use the Windows version of dBASE. If you use ObjectPAL, then use Paradox for Windows. If you are new to both, then it really is a dificult choice. If you have not used either and are a heavey programmer, then you may wish to try dBASE (a programmer oriented development environment). If you have limited programming experience, then you may prefer Paradox (a user oriented development environment). Even though I love to code, I prefer the user oriented Paradox development environment because it saves me lots of time. Here are some of the strong points of dBASE for Windows.

        o   Truely OOP

        o   It's the dBASE standard

        o   VBX controls

        o   dBASE DOS applications port right over

        o   two way controls

        o   You can see all code (nothing hidden).

        o   Programmer oriented development environment

dBASE does not have OBEX, a datamodeler (although queries do the job), or OLE 2 support.

Paradox for Windows strong points:

        o   OLE 2.0 support now with version 5.0

        o   Mature product

        o   OBEX support

        o   User oriented development environment

Paradox does not have VBX support and is not truely OOP. As you can see, both are full featured products capable of accomplishing any database task.
