Delphi BDE:
BDE Description

Posted 21 years ago on 3/18/2003 and updated 8/12/2009
Take Away: Description of the Borland Database Engine (BDE).

KB100159

The Borland Database Engine (BDE) is how Delphi, Paradox, WordPerfect, C++Builder, dBASE, and other applications read and write various databases. The BDE to Borland is very much like ODBC is for Microsoft. It is the peice of generic software between an application and a database. Whether the database is local Paradox/dBASE files or an SQL server like Oracle. With each type of data access the BDE uses separate DLLs to interface with the database or database server. To us Delphi programmers, we don't have to worry too much about the differences between dBASE and Paradox, we simply use the BDE API. More specifically, Delphi uses the BDE API and we use Delphi. However, when Delphi has not surfaced a BDE command, than we can use the BDE API directly.

You can encrypt a Paradox table by restructuring it. However, it will only keep out novice users as their are hacks that exist to unencrypt an encrypted Paradox table. Your best bet for security is to physically secure the computer hosting the hard drive with the data on it.

BDE is an amazing database facility but I prefer to use SQL, it‘s easy to use and also reliable just the same as affordable logo design services that resemble the business and also reliable for your business.
